LAPEER – The Lapeer Lakers Basketball teams of the Lapeer Area Homeschool Athletics (LAHA) took 4 of their teams over to the West side of the state for the West Michigan Winter Classic Basketball Tournament last weekend.
Their boys’ teams; 12U, 14U, and 16U, dominated the tournament going undefeated in their age groups. The 10U girls team took their first two losses of the season against West Michigan Hornets (12-6) and the Wyoming Warriors (18-15).
The 12U boys in their first game defeated the Wyoming Warriors 48-14. Lead scorer for the Lakers was Jestin Kohlman with 18 points -all of which were three pointers. The second lead scorer was Nolan Buie with 11 points. The game didn’t appear to be a challenge for the Lakers.
Their second opponents were the Big Rapid Badgers who proved no competition for the Lakers 12U boys as they sailed through the game with an easy win at 58-5.
The final game for the 12U was against the West Michigan Hornets. The Hornets have long been an organization with good teams who’ve always given the Lakers a competitive run. This year the Lakers have proven to be the better team as they dominated the game, winning 49-18. Top scorers for the Lakers were Nolan Buie with 15 points, Jestin Kohlman with 13 Points, and Samuel Coverly with 12 points. This clutched the first-place tournament win for the Lakers 12U boys’ team.
Up next was the 14U boys’ team who again seemed to sail through the competition on the Westside.
Their first game against Holland Wave was an easy win with a final score of 56-26.
The 14U boys then faced off with the West Michigan Hornets (white) team and again defeated their second opponents 56-22.
In round three the Lakers 14U boys went up against the West Michigan Hornets (blue) team. While West Michigan’s blue team was better than their white team, they still didn’t have enough to beat the Lakers, The Lakers came out of that game on top, as well with a final score of 56-45.
These wins sealed the 14U Lakers first place in their age group for the Winter Classic tournament alongside the 12U Lakers boys’ team.
The boys 16U Lakers team was a mocking jay to their younger teams as they went undefeated as well. They started out slow against the Holland Wave as the Wave had an early lead, but Lakers wouldn’t let that last long as they fired up their momentum and ended the game with a 72-53 win. Aiden Lomasney finished with 18 points, John Hayse had 14 points, Josh Campbell and Reed Cotton both brought in 12 points each.
The West Michigan Hornets (red) team was the Lakers’ second face off, however, they weren’t much of a contest for the 16U Lakers as they sealed the win 77-35. Top scorers were Aiden Lomasney with a whopping 23 points, Josh Campbell with 12 points and Josh Prouty 11 points.
The 16U Lakers then played the Benton Bucks in their third and final game for the tournament. The Lakers finished the game with a resounding 52-31 win against the Bucks. Even though the 16U Lakers went undefeated it wasn’t enough to earn them the first-place spot. Josh Campbell had 16 points, Reed Cotton had 13 points and John Hayse had 11 points.
The tournament was based off a combination of points and the West Michigan Hornets (black) team also went undefeated but allowed less points to be scored against them in their games, therefore, they ended up with the overall first place spot in the West Michigan Winter Classic tournament.
According to Lakers’ coaches the West Michigan tournament is always one they look forward to. It gives the teams a chance to see the competition on the West side of the state before the state finals in February. It’s tough to play these teams in the regular season because of the distance.
The Lapeer Lakers Basketball teams seems to be a force to be reckon with as all three of their boys’ teams; 12U, 14U, and 16U are all undefeated this season. They are the favorites to win the state championship in February in Mt Pleasant, MI and will also be a threat for Regionals in Indianapolis in February as well.
The teams will travel this weekend to Fort Wayne, Indiana for the Fort Wayne GUAARD tournament. This is another tournament where the Lapeer Lakers will be able to compete against teams, they will face in the regional tournament next month.
All three teams will also head down to Springfield, Missouri in March for the National Tournament.
