I decided to share information on the health benefits of essential oils since they have positively impacted my life for a long time.
As I was contemplating this topic, the word “essential” lit up in my mind like a light bulb. Ahhh yes, essential!! Which in this context, it is defined as fundamentally important or necessary; indispensable. Sometimes words or phrases become familiar, and it is important to be inspired towards further understanding.
Historically, essential oils were mankind’s first medicine as noted in Egyptian hieroglyphics, Chinese manuscripts and the Bible.
My purpose is to provide some of the basics about essential oils. You can always do additional research as there are many resources, even locally, with an abundance of information, so be sure to check it out!
An essential oil is a concentrated hydrophobic liquid containing chemical compounds from plants that easily evaporate at normal temperatures. Simply, the oil of the plant. There are many ways to extract these plant oils and it is generally done by distillation.
Now for application, there are three types. Topical application is the broadest form. It includes direct application to the body with the feet being noteworthy, since they are the second fastest area of the body to absorb oils because of the large pores, along with Vita Flex Therapy, Raindrop Technique, Auricular Therapy and perfume or cologne.
While many oils can be topically applied neat (without dilution), others are recommended to be diluted with another carrier oil. Aromatic application through the mouth and nose can be achieved through a diffuser, cloth/tissue, hot water, vaporizer/humidifier, fan/vent or simply inhaling from the bottle. Lastly, internal application for those oils designated as GRAS (Generally Regarded As Safe for internal consumption) can be added to a food or beverage to be consumed or by adding to a capsule and swallowed.
My final thoughts are from the Bible. Genesis 1:11&12 says …”Let the land produce vegetation: seed bearing plants…” “… And God saw that it was good.” I hope you find the “good” in essential oils that were planned for our benefit.
