At 6 a.m. Saturday morning, Lapeer Fire Department was toned with a full assist from Elba Twp. Fire Station 2 for heavy smoke coming from the old Cut Rate Auto Repair building on Imlay City Rd in Lapeer. Upon arrival, firefighters started an aggressive interior extinguishment of the fire that was inside the attic. There was also smoke in the main area below the attic.
Firefighters’ efforts were hampered by a quick roof collapse due to the construction of the building and the heavy fire that was inside the attic.
A Firefighter was injured during the roof collapse and transported to the hospital by Medstar with minor injuries. The fire spread quickly because of the construction type of the building.
At 6:30 a.m. Metamora Fire Department was toned for a full assist to the fire. At approximately 6:40 a.m. Attica Twp. Fire was also paged for backup to the fire. DTE Energy and Consumers Energy were called to disconnect electrical and gas utilities to the building to protect against future danger to the public.
Lapeer Department of Public Works brought in a backhoe and a front loader to the scene to assist with removing material from the building to eliminate hotspots. Lapeer Fire was also assisted on scene by Lapeer County EMS for standby. Michigan State Police provided traffic control.
Davison-Richfield Fire Department provided backup at Lapeer’s fire hall as support, since Lapeer City Fire resources were occupied.
The building was being used by MKX, a retail marijuana dispensary, as storage for their products. The cause of the fire is currently under investigation, but no foul play is suspected according to Lapeer City Fire Captain, Chris Jadach.
